I am a Neuroscientist conducting translational research in the field of brain diseases. Recently, I have developed interest in an alternative therapy-namely music therapy in treating brain disorders including Autism. Autism-specific deficits in social communication/interaction and restricted/repetitive patterns of behavior stem from dysfunctional brain connectivity due to deficient dopamine/oxytocin signaling. In that context, dopamine/oxytocin inducing effects of music, especially Raga Therapy (a type of Yoga called “Nada Yoga”), are remarkable. Ragas containing all/majority of pure/consonant notes, elicit joy by inducing dopamine/oxytocin, and these effects can be magnified by adding specific flat notes, making Raga the “tailored” therapy in reverting autistic symptoms to normalcy.
